Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday sharply criticised the Congress party and the opposition, asserting that the BJP is resolving issues left unaddressed by previous Congress governments in Assam.
Addressing a rally in Guwahati after inaugurating the new terminal at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Modi said the Congress had failed to safeguard Assam’s security, development, and identity over decades. He accused the party of protecting illegal entrants and neglecting the region’s growth.
“The Congress gave protection to infiltrators who grabbed forests and land, threatening Assam’s security and identity. The BJP government has been correcting mistakes that Congress kept making for decades,” Modi said, defending the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls aimed at identifying alleged illegal voters.
Modi also linked the party’s work in Assam to historical narratives, alleging that Congress once considered including Assam in East Pakistan during Partition. He highlighted Assam’s development under the BJP’s “double-engine” model and said the government had taken steps to ensure security, infrastructure growth, and public welfare.
The Prime Minister’s remarks come amid rising political activity in Assam ahead of state elections, where issues of migration, identity, and governance remain central. Opposition leaders, particularly Congress, have dismissed many of Modi’s claims as politically motivated, calling for fact-based debate on Assam’s history and contemporary challenges.
