At least nine people were killed and ten others injured in a shooting at a tavern in the Bekkersdal township, west of Johannesburg, South African police said on Sunday. Authorities have launched a manhunt to track down the attackers.
The incident occurred early Sunday morning at a licensed tavern, where a group of armed men reportedly opened fire on patrons inside the establishment and those fleeing outside. Police said the attackers used a white minibus and a silver sedan to carry out the assault. The motive behind the attack remains unclear.
The wounded were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed that an investigation is underway and called on the public to provide any information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects.
Bekkersdal, located about 40 kilometers southwest of Johannesburg, is a township affected by high unemployment and social challenges following the decline of local gold mining. South Africa continues to face significant issues with violent crime, including a high national murder rate.
This shooting is the latest in a series of violent incidents in the country, highlighting ongoing concerns over public safety and gun violence.
