Biswanath Tribunal Declares Two Women Foreigners, Orders 24-Hour Exit from Assam

A Foreigners’ Tribunal in Assam’s Biswanath district has declared two women as foreign nationals and directed them to leave the state within 24 hours, officials said on Sunday.
The tribunal found that Asamul Khatun (also known as Asmal Begum) from Mishamari and Afuja Begum (also known as Arfuja Begum) from Bokrapatta failed to prove their Indian citizenship during the proceedings. Both women are currently held at the Goalpara detention camp.
Under the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act, 1950, the Biswanath District Commissioner ordered the women to exit Assam via the designated border points, including Dhubri, Sribhumi, or South Salmara–Mankachar. Authorities warned that failure to comply would result in coercive action to remove them from the state.
This order follows a recent trend in Assam, where tribunals and district administrations are actively enforcing citizenship laws. Last week, Nagaon district authorities issued expulsion orders for 15 individuals previously declared foreigners for failing to establish Indian citizenship.
The move underscores Assam’s ongoing focus on identifying and removing people deemed to be residing illegally, amid wider discussions on citizenship, immigration, and legal safeguards in the state.
