The Indian National Congress on Saturday strongly refuted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s allegations that the party was involved in a conspiracy to hand over Assam to Pakistan during Partition.
Speaking at a political rally in Guwahati, PM Modi claimed that Congress, in collusion with the British and the Muslim League, had attempted to include Assam in East Pakistan, and praised Assam’s first post-Independence Chief Minister, Gopinath Bordoloi, for defying his party and keeping the region within India. Modi linked the historical narrative to contemporary concerns over illegal migration and voter roll revisions in Assam.
Reacting to the allegations, Congress MP Manickam Tagore described the Prime Minister’s claims as “historically false and politically motivated.” He said there was no proposal to hand over Assam to Pakistan and highlighted that the region was a Hindu-majority province, with only the Sylhet district joining East Pakistan following a British-organised referendum. Tagore emphasised Bordoloi’s role in retaining Karimganj and other areas within India.
Tagore further criticised Modi for “turning complex historical events into campaign rhetoric” and accused him of spreading misinformation to score political points.
The exchange comes amid heightened political discourse in Assam over issues of identity, migration, and electoral roll revisions, with parties gearing up for upcoming elections.
