Opposition parties in Assam on Sunday intensified their criticism of the ongoing Special Revision of electoral rolls, warning that the process could lead to the exclusion of a large number of legitimate voters ahead of the forthcoming Assembly elections.
Leaders of the Congress, Raijor Dal, Assam Jatiya Parishad, CPI, CPI(M) and CPI(ML) submitted a joint memorandum to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Assam, alleging serious procedural lapses during the revision exercise. They claimed that the current process risks disenfranchising genuine voters, particularly from marginalised and vulnerable communities.
According to the opposition, during the claims and objections phase following the publication of the draft electoral rolls on December 27, 2025, a large number of objections have been filed in bulk, often without proper verification. They alleged that objections citing reasons such as death or permanent relocation were submitted arbitrarily, sometimes by a single individual against multiple voters.
Opposition leaders also expressed concern over the alleged misuse of Election Photo Identity Card (EPIC) details and mobile numbers to file objections without the knowledge or consent of the affected voters. They argued that such practices violate provisions of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, and the rules governing electoral roll revision.
The parties warned that unless corrective measures are taken, lakhs of eligible voters could be left out of the final electoral rolls, scheduled to be published on February 10, 2026. They urged the Election Commission of India to intervene, reject unlawful bulk objections and ensure strict adherence to established procedures.
The issue has assumed political significance as Assam prepares for the 2026 Assembly elections. Opposition parties said any large-scale exclusion of voters would undermine the credibility of the electoral process and erode public trust in democratic institutions.
The Election Commission has maintained that the revision exercise is being conducted in accordance with legal guidelines, while the state government has dismissed allegations of wrongdoing. However, opposition leaders said they would continue to press for transparency and safeguards to protect the voting rights of genuine citizens.
