The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday published the draft electoral roll of Uttar Pradesh after completing the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, marking a crucial step towards ensuring an accurate and updated voter list ahead of upcoming elections.
According to the Uttar Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer, Navdeep Rinwa, the draft roll includes the names of 12,55,56,025 electors, accounting for 81.30 per cent of the total 15,44,30,092 voters listed in the previous electoral roll.
As part of the revision process, about 2.89 crore names, or 18.70 per cent of the earlier voter list, have been excluded. Officials said that 46.23 lakh voters were identified as deceased, while nearly 2.17 crore names were found to be untraceable or shifted during door-to-door verification conducted by Booth Level Officers. Additionally, around 25.47 lakh duplicate entries were detected across multiple locations.
The publication of the draft roll has opened the claims and objections window from January 6 to February 6, during which voters can seek inclusion of their names, correction of details, or raise objections against wrongful deletions. The Election Commission has urged citizens to verify their details through the official voter portal or at designated facilitation centres.
After addressing claims and objections and completing verification, the final electoral roll is scheduled to be published on March 6.
The Election Commission said the Special Intensive Revision exercise aims to enhance the accuracy, transparency and credibility of electoral rolls, ensuring that only eligible voters are included while preventing duplication and outdated entries. Voters have been advised to actively participate in the process to safeguard their voting rights.
