In a major blow to drug trafficking networks in the Northeast, the Assam Rifles, in coordination with the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), seized a large consignment of Yaba tablets worth around ₹16 crore in Tripura’s Khowai district, officials said on Sunday.
The seizure was made during a joint operation based on specific intelligence inputs regarding the movement of narcotics through the region. Security personnel intercepted a truck on National Highway-8 and, following a detailed search, recovered approximately 1.6 lakh methamphetamine tablets, commonly known as Yaba. The banned drug is a potent combination of methamphetamine and caffeine and is widely abused due to its highly addictive nature.
The vehicle used to transport the contraband was seized, and the driver was arrested in connection with the case. Officials said the accused is a resident of southern Assam. Further investigation is underway to identify other members of the trafficking network and to determine the origin and intended destination of the drugs.
Preliminary findings suggest that the consignment may have originated outside the country and was being transported through the Northeast using established smuggling routes. Authorities are also probing whether the drugs were meant for local distribution or for onward trafficking to neighbouring regions.
Security agencies said the operation is part of intensified anti-narcotics efforts across the Northeast, particularly along vulnerable transit corridors close to international borders. The seized narcotics and the arrested individual have been handed over to the DRI for further legal proceedings under relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Officials reiterated their commitment to continuing coordinated operations to curb drug trafficking and dismantle organised narcotics networks operating in the region.
