Justice D Y Chandrachud was appointed as the 50th Chief Justice of India by President Draupadi Murmu on Monday.
He will take oath on November 9, a day after incumbent CJI Justice Uday Umesh Lalit demits office on attaining the age of 65.
Dy Chandrachud will take over as chief justice soon after. President Draupadi Murmu today approved the appointment of DY Chandrachud as the 50th Chief Justice of India. Justice Chandrachud will continue to hold the post of Chief Justice of India till November 11, 2024.
President Draupadi Murmu today formally agreed to the matter. Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju tweeted on Monday evening, "President Draupadi Murmu has appointed Justice DY Chandrachud as the Chief Justice of India on the basis of the powers conferred by the Constitution of India. Justice DY Chandrachud will take charge on November 9, 2022. '
On October 11, Justice Chandrachud was appointed as the next Chief Justice of India by Chief Justice of India U U Lalit. Justice Chandrachud will be the Chief Justice of India for two years. He will retire on November 11, 2024.
Justice Chandrachud graduated in Economics from St. Stephen's College, New Delhi. He studied law in Delhi University. He received his LLM degree from Harvard Law School in the US. He also earned a doctorate in juridical science.
He served as additional solicitor general of India since 1998. In June of that year, he served as an advocate in the Bombay High Court. On March 29, 2002, he took over as a judge of the Bombay High Court. Justice Chandrachud took over as the Chief Justice of allahabad high court from October 31, 2013. Then in 2016, he became a judge of the Supreme Court. Justice DY Chandrachud even set aside the verdict passed by his father.
In 2018, Justice Chandrachud visited his father and former Chief Justice of India Y.V. Chandrachud had ordered quashing of a verdict. His father had given a verdict on adultery 36 years ago. Justice Chandrachud said the verdict passed by his father was not constitutionally correct. A year before that verdict, Justice DY Chandrachud had set aside another judgment of his father.
In August 2017, he ruled that privacy is a fundamental right. Justice Chandrachud will be sworn in as the Chief Justice of India on November 9. It may be recalled that Justice Chandrachud's father Jaswant Chandrachud was the sixth Chief Justice of the country. He served as the CJI from February 22, 1978 to July 11, 1985.
