National Textiles Ministers’ Meet in Guwahati to Chart Roadmap for $350 Billion Industry

Guwahati will host the National Conference of Textiles Ministers on January 8 and 9, bringing together Union and State ministers, senior officials and industry stakeholders to chalk out a coordinated strategy to transform India’s textiles sector into a $350 billion industry by 2030, with an export target of $100 billion.
The conference is being organised by the Ministry of Textiles in collaboration with the Government of Assam and is aimed at strengthening Centre–State coordination to boost manufacturing, exports, investment and employment in the textiles and apparel sector.
Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister of State for Textiles Pabitra Margherita, along with textiles ministers and senior officials from states and Union Territories, are expected to attend the two-day meet.
According to officials, the conference will focus on policy alignment, infrastructure development, investment promotion, skill development and innovation to enhance India’s global competitiveness in textiles. Special emphasis will be laid on man-made fibres, technical textiles, sustainability and adoption of new technologies across the value chain.
A key highlight of the event will be a dedicated session on strengthening and empowering the textiles sector in the North-Eastern Region. The session will deliberate on leveraging the region’s strengths in silk, handloom, handicrafts and bamboo-based textiles, promoting women-led enterprises, and improving branding and market access for traditional products.
The theme of the conference, “India’s Textiles: Weaving Growth, Heritage and Innovation,” underlines the government’s focus on balancing large-scale industrial growth with the preservation and commercialisation of India’s rich textile heritage.
Officials said the outcomes of the Guwahati meet are expected to feed into a national action plan that will help generate large-scale employment, attract fresh investments and position India as a global hub for textile manufacturing and exports in the coming years.
