Assam Draft Electoral Roll Flags 4.78 Lakh Deceased Voters Ahead of 2026 Assembly Polls

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Friday published the draft electoral roll for Assam following a Special Summary Revision, flagging the names of 4.78 lakh deceased voters for deletion ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
According to official data, the draft roll has identified 4,78,992 electors as deceased. In addition, 5.23 lakh voters were found to have shifted from their registered addresses, while 53,619 entries were marked as duplicate or requiring correction. In total, about 10.56 lakh names have been proposed for deletion or modification as part of the roll-cleaning exercise.
The revision was carried out through a large-scale house-to-house verification drive conducted between November 22 and December 20, covering over 61 lakh households across the state. The exercise involved Booth Level Officers and election officials verifying voter details on the ground to ensure the accuracy of the electoral database.
As per the draft roll, Assam’s electorate now stands at around 2.52 crore voters, excluding ‘D-voters’ whose citizenship status remains under scrutiny and who are not eligible to vote.
With the publication of the draft roll, the claims and objections period has begun and will continue until January 22, 2026, during which electors can seek corrections, inclusion of names, or raise objections to deletions. The final electoral roll is scheduled to be published on February 10, 2026.
Election officials said the revision aims to improve the integrity of the voter list by removing ineligible entries and ensuring that only eligible and genuine voters are included ahead of the crucial Assembly elections next year.
