Bangladesh Holds State Mourning, Funeral for Slain Uprising Activist

Bangladesh on Saturday observed a state day of mourning and held a state funeral for slain activist Sharif Osman Hadi, whose killing has intensified political tensions ahead of the country’s upcoming national elections.
Hadi, a prominent figure in the 2024 student-led uprising and a youth leader associated with the movement that challenged the previous government, was shot dead earlier this month during a public appearance. His assassination sent shockwaves across the country, triggering widespread protests and calls for justice.
The funeral, held under tight security near the National Parliament complex in Dhaka, was attended by senior members of the interim government, political leaders, activists, and thousands of supporters. The interim administration, led by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, declared the day of mourning, with national flags flown at half-mast across government offices and institutions.
Authorities said enhanced security measures were put in place in Dhaka and other major cities amid fears of unrest. Large crowds gathered to pay their last respects, reflecting Hadi’s growing symbolic importance among young voters and pro-democracy activists.
Hadi’s killing has sparked demonstrations in several parts of Bangladesh, with protesters demanding a transparent investigation and accountability for those responsible. The unrest has also heightened concerns about political stability as the country prepares for elections scheduled for early next year.
The government has pledged a thorough probe into the murder, while rights groups and opposition leaders have urged authorities to ensure justice and protect democratic freedoms during the election period.
