World Turtle Day is an annual celebration observed on May 23 each year, several beaches are known as turtle nesting sites, where you can witness the incredible sight of turtle hatchlings making their way to sea, Initiated by the American Tortoise rescue in 2000, the encourages people to come together and deepen their understanding of these remarkable creatures.
Tortoises live on land and can live up to 300 years, while turtles live in water and have a lifespan of about 40 years, both play important roles in the ecosystem.
Turtle hatchings usually witnessed between April and May, and only a few locations in India offer the opportunity to witness this phenomenon, here are some spots in India where you can observed turtle hatchings:
Gahrimatha Beach in Odisha: It is a part of the Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary and one of the most important nesting sites for Olive Ridley turtles. The sanctuary, established to protect these turtles come ashores to lay their eggs, and the sight of hatchlings, known as arribada, coming from November to April.
Velas Beach, Maharashtra: Velas beach in Maharashtra hosts the annual Turtle Festival, attracting tourist who come to see the turtle hatchlings, Velas Beach servers as crucial nesting site for Olive Ridley turtles on the west coast.
Agonda Beach, Goa: Serving as both a nesting and hatching site for Loggerhead turtles from October to March, Agonda Beach witnesses the annual arrival of turtles for nesting local conservationists and NGO members manage hatcheries to protect eggs from predators.
Rushikulya Beach, Odisha: Situated in southern coast of Odisha, Rushikulya Beach is renowed for the extensive nesting of Olive Ridley turtles. the beach become lively place during the nesting seasion in February and March.
Kovalam Beach, Kerala: Situated near Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, Kovalam Beach is renowed for both its tourism appeal an turtle conservation efforts, the nesting season from November to March with the peak nesting season occuring in February.
