India-Bhutan Border Gates to Reopen on Sept 23 After 2.5 Years

Good news for tourists. The main entrance of India and Bhutan will be opened for tourists from September 23.

 

From September 23, the gateways to the Indo-Bhutan border at Samdrup Jongkhar and Gelephu on the Assam border will be opened for tourists. Bhutan will reopen for tourists after a gap of two-and-a-half years. It is learnt that the government is all set to open the Indo-Bhutan border from September 23 to reduce the spread of Covid-19 in the state.

Tashi Penjore, director of the Himalayan state's Ministry of Housing and Cultural Affairs, said the Bhutanese government has formally announced that it will open its international border with India on September 23 due to the decline in Covid cases. He also mentioned that they are ready to provide all facilities to the tourists and urged the tourists to visit different places in Bhutan.

According to the minister, apart from Phuentsholing and Paro, an additional three entry gates have been added for tourists. A Development Fund (SDF) will be taken from tourists visiting Bhutan, which will be spent on improving services and infrastructure besides preserving the environment.

As regarding tour packages, the Bhutan government has planned eco-tourism, bird-watching and other packages for visitors.The authorities have appealed to the tourists to bring voter ID cards and other relevant documents along with them during the visit.
