Several Assam Police commandos were injured after militants of the banned outfit United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) launched a pre-dawn attack on a security camp in Tinsukia district on Sunday, officials said.
The attack took place in the Jagun area along the Assam–Arunachal Pradesh border, where heavily armed insurgents targeted a police commando camp using automatic weapons and explosive devices. According to security sources, the militants fired indiscriminately and hurled grenades at the camp, triggering a fierce exchange of gunfire.
Police personnel stationed at the camp retaliated promptly, forcing the attackers to retreat into nearby forested areas under the cover of darkness. The injured commandos were immediately shifted to a medical facility in Dibrugarh for treatment. Officials said the condition of the injured personnel is stable.
Preliminary reports suggest the attack was well-coordinated, with multiple explosive rounds used to inflict maximum damage. Security agencies suspect the involvement of ULFA(I), which has been active in parts of Upper Assam and along inter-state border regions.
Following the incident, a massive search operation has been launched by Assam Police and other security forces in and around the area to track down the militants. Additional forces have been deployed, and vigil has been intensified along the border to prevent further attacks.
The incident comes at a sensitive time, just ahead of the Assam Assembly elections, raising concerns over insurgent activity in the region. Authorities said they are maintaining high alert across vulnerable districts and closely monitoring the situation.
Further details are awaited as investigations continue.
