Ticket Row Triggers Dissent in BJP Ahead of Assam Polls; Rebel Threat Looms

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is grappling with internal dissent in Assam ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, as disgruntled leaders threaten to contest as independents following the party’s ticket distribution.
The discontent erupted after the BJP denied renomination to several sitting MLAs while fielding new faces, including recent entrants from rival parties. The move has sparked anger among party workers and long-time leaders, many of whom feel sidelined despite years of loyalty.
In a major setback for the party, former Dholai MLA Nihar Ranjan Das resigned after being denied a ticket, exposing cracks within the BJP’s Barak Valley unit. His exit is being seen as a sign of growing unrest at the grassroots level.
Adding to the turmoil, senior leader Jayanta Kumar Das, who was denied a ticket from Dispur, has also quit the party and announced his decision to contest as an independent candidate. He has further hinted at launching a new political outfit, escalating concerns within the party leadership.
Several other aspirants who failed to secure nominations have reportedly warned of rebelling against official BJP candidates or extending tacit support to opposition parties, raising fears of vote-splitting in key constituencies.
A major source of resentment is the BJP’s decision to field leaders who recently switched sides, particularly from the Congress. Grassroots workers have voiced strong objections, alleging that “outsiders” are being prioritised over dedicated party cadres. Opposition parties have also targeted the BJP, branding some of its candidates as “imported”.
Amid the growing dissent, senior BJP leaders have launched damage-control efforts, reaching out to disgruntled members to prevent further exits. Party leaders are holding meetings, especially in sensitive regions like Barak Valley, to pacify rebels and maintain organisational unity.
With the nomination deadline approaching, the possibility of rebel candidates contesting independently poses a significant challenge for the BJP. Such developments could impact electoral outcomes by splitting votes and weakening the party’s prospects in closely contested seats.
The ticket controversy has thus emerged as a key internal hurdle for the BJP as it prepares for a high-stakes electoral battle in Assam.
