JMM Eyes Expansion in Assam, Plans to Contest Over 30 Seats
Guwahati, March 19: The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) is gearing up to expand its political footprint in Assam, with plans to contest more than 30 seats in the upcoming Assembly elections.
According to party sources, JMM is likely to field candidates in around 31 constituencies across the state, though the final list is yet to be announced. The move marks a significant push by the party to establish a presence beyond its traditional stronghold in Jharkhand.
Central to JMM’s strategy is outreach to Assam’s tea-tribe communities, a sizeable voter base with historical roots in the Chhotanagpur region of Jharkhand. The party believes that shared cultural and ethnic ties could help it build a support base among these voters, many of whom continue to face socio-economic challenges and seek stronger political representation.
Senior JMM leader Vinod Pandey said the party sees growing political opportunities in Assam and is focusing on issues concerning tribal rights and welfare. He highlighted the leadership of Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren as a key factor that could resonate with voters in the state.
Soren is expected to play an active role in the party’s campaign in Assam, particularly in constituencies with a significant tribal population. Party leaders indicated that he may campaign extensively to consolidate support among tea-tribe voters.
The development comes at a time when several national and regional parties are intensifying their preparations for the high-stakes Assam Assembly elections. JMM’s entry is likely to add a new dimension to the electoral contest, particularly in Upper Assam districts where tea-tribe voters hold considerable influence.
With its focus on identity, representation, and welfare issues, JMM is positioning itself as an alternative political force in Assam’s evolving electoral landscape.
