With the Assam Assembly elections approaching, authorities in Assam and Meghalaya have intensified coordination along their shared interstate boundary to ensure peaceful and orderly polling.
Senior officials from both states have initiated joint measures, including increased security deployment, coordinated patrolling, and real-time communication between district administrations in border areas. These steps are aimed at preventing any law and order issues, particularly in sensitive zones with a history of disputes.
The Assam–Meghalaya border has remained contentious for decades, with disagreements over 12 identified “areas of difference” stemming from differing interpretations of the Assam Reorganisation (Meghalaya) Act, 1969. Although a significant breakthrough was achieved in 2022—when both states resolved six sectors through a mutual agreement—six areas continue to remain unresolved, including Langpih, Borduar, and Khanduli–Psiar.
Officials said the enhanced coordination is crucial in view of the upcoming elections, as several of the disputed locations fall in politically sensitive regions. Authorities are focusing on intelligence sharing and coordinated responses to any emerging situation, especially in districts adjoining the interstate boundary.
Security has also been heightened with the deployment of additional forces in vulnerable pockets. Election authorities are working closely with law enforcement agencies to ensure that polling is conducted without disruption and that voters feel safe in border areas.
The move comes amid renewed emphasis on maintaining peace in historically tense regions, as both state governments seek to avoid any flare-ups during the electoral process. Officials expressed confidence that the strengthened cooperation would help ensure a smooth and incident-free election.
