Assam Plans Medical College in Every District; MBBS Seats Targeted to Reach 5,000 by 2030

Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday announced that the Assam government is working towards establishing a medical college in every district, with a target to increase MBBS seats in the state to 5,000 by 2030.
The Chief Minister made the announcement while inaugurating the Pragjyotishpur Medical College and Hospital, highlighting the state’s long-term vision to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and medical education.
At present, Assam has around 15 medical colleges offering nearly 2,000 MBBS seats. With at least 10 new medical colleges currently under construction, the government expects a significant rise in seat capacity over the next few years.
Sarma said the initiative aims to reduce the number of students from Assam who go to other states or abroad for medical studies, while also ensuring improved healthcare services across districts, particularly in rural and underserved areas.
“Each district having a medical college will not only boost medical education but also enhance healthcare delivery at the grassroots level,” he said.
The expansion plan is part of the state government’s broader strategy to position Assam as a major hub for healthcare and medical education in the Northeast. In addition to medical colleges, the government has been investing in nursing institutions, cancer care facilities, and allied health services.
Officials noted that the move is in line with the Centre’s push to increase the number of medical seats across the country and improve doctor-patient ratios.
Once implemented, the initiative is expected to significantly improve access to quality healthcare and create more opportunities for aspiring medical students within the state.
