Severe pre-monsoon storms have wreaked havoc across Northeast India, leaving at least four people dead in Arunachal Pradesh and causing widespread damage in Assam and other neighbouring states.
Officials said the fatalities in Arunachal Pradesh were reported due to rain-related incidents triggered by heavy downpours, thunderstorms, and strong winds that lashed several districts. Authorities are assessing the extent of the damage while emergency response teams remain on alert.
Assam has emerged as one of the worst-affected states, with multiple districts witnessing intense rainfall, gusty winds, and lightning. The adverse weather has led to power outages, uprooting of trees, damage to houses, and waterlogging in low-lying areas, disrupting normal life.
In Meghalaya, widespread hailstorms—reported to be among the most severe in recent times—caused extensive damage to crops, homes, and vehicles. Several areas also experienced disruptions in electricity supply following the storm.
The India Meteorological Department has warned that the region may continue to experience thunderstorms, lightning, and isolated heavy rainfall over the coming days. Residents have been advised to remain cautious and avoid venturing out during severe weather conditions.
Authorities across the Northeast are closely monitoring the situation, with disaster management teams kept on standby to respond to emergencies. Efforts are underway to restore essential services and provide relief to affected populations as the region grapples with the impact of the early pre-monsoon onslaught.
