Nearly Half of Assam’s Electorate Comprises Women Ahead of Assembly Polls

Women now constitute nearly half of the electorate in Assam, underscoring their growing influence in the state’s political landscape ahead of the upcoming assembly elections.
According to the latest electoral rolls released by the Election Commission of India, Assam has about 2.49 crore registered voters, of which 1,24,75,583 are women, 1,24,82,213 are men, and 343 are registered as third-gender voters. The figures indicate that women make up almost 50% of the total electorate, narrowing the gender gap significantly compared to previous elections.
Officials said the shrinking difference between male and female voters reflects sustained voter enrolment drives and increased awareness among women about participating in the democratic process. In earlier elections, male voters outnumbered women by several lakhs, but the gap has steadily declined over the years.
The large presence of women voters is expected to play a decisive role in the forthcoming election to the Assam Legislative Assembly, which has 126 seats. Political parties are increasingly focusing on issues such as women’s safety, welfare schemes, employment opportunities, and healthcare to attract this significant voter base.
Analysts believe that the near parity between male and female voters highlights a broader trend of rising political participation among women in the state. As campaigning intensifies, women voters are likely to emerge as a key factor shaping the outcome of the election.
