Two people were killed after a wild elephant attacked a house at a tea estate in Assam’s Tinsukia district late on Friday night, officials said.
The incident took place at the Brahmajan Tea Estate under Pengaree Police Station when a wild elephant reportedly strayed into the labour lines from the nearby Upper Dehing Reserve Forest.
According to local sources, the victims—an elderly woman aged around 85 and her 45-year-old son—were asleep in their house at Line No. 4 of the tea estate when the elephant broke into the structure. The animal allegedly trampled them to death before moving back towards the forest area.
Police and forest officials rushed to the spot soon after receiving information about the incident. Personnel from Pengaree Police Station along with forest department staff recovered the bodies and initiated necessary legal procedures.
The tragic incident has once again highlighted the recurring human–elephant conflict in several areas of Upper Assam, particularly in regions located close to forest reserves.
Residents of villages and tea garden labour lines near the forest areas have reported frequent elephant incursions in recent months. Locals have urged authorities to implement preventive measures such as improved monitoring, early warning systems, and stronger barriers to prevent elephants from entering residential settlements.
Forest department officials said efforts are being made to monitor elephant movement in the area to prevent further incidents.
