Maibang Tunnel on NH-27 Turns ‘Death Trap’, Motorists Allege Negligence

The Maibang tunnel along National Highway 27 in Assam’s Dima Hasao district has reportedly become a “death trap,” with motorists alleging severe negligence and poor maintenance of the crucial road infrastructure.
The tunnel, located near Maibang on the Lumding–Silchar stretch of the highway, is about 1.1 kilometres long and was constructed as part of the East–West Corridor project to improve connectivity in the region. However, frequent users of the route say the tunnel has developed large potholes and craters, making driving extremely hazardous and increasing the risk of accidents.
Drivers and transporters travelling through the tunnel have also complained about inadequate lighting inside the structure, which makes navigation difficult, particularly during night hours. According to motorists, the damaged road surface combined with poor visibility has made the stretch dangerous for both heavy vehicles and smaller cars.
Transporters further pointed out that despite paying toll fees at the toll plaza near Lumding, basic facilities such as drinking water and sanitation are reportedly lacking. Truck drivers said a 16-wheeler vehicle is charged around ₹560 at the toll gate, but the condition of the highway does not reflect proper maintenance.
Motorists also alleged that repair work for the tunnel stretch was awarded in August 2024 to the construction firm DC Ajmera. However, they claim that significant repair work has yet to begin. There are also allegations that the contractor sublet the project to another firm based in Guwahati.
Local residents and transporters have urged authorities to take immediate steps to repair the tunnel and expedite completion of the Lumding–Silchar highway project. They warned that continued delays could lead to more accidents on the important road corridor connecting upper Assam and the Barak Valley.
