Former Assam Congress president Bhupen Borah on Monday said that several political parties have reached out to him following his recent exit from the Congress, as he prepared to meet Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma amid intense political speculation ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
Speaking to reporters before the scheduled meeting, Borah said he was weighing his options carefully and had not taken any final decision about his political future. “Many parties have approached me. I am considering everything and will take a decision in due course,” he said, adding that he remains committed to public life and electoral politics.
Borah, who recently resigned as president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, described his current political position as uncertain but maintained that his connection with the people remains intact irrespective of party affiliation. He also indicated that he intends to contest the next Assembly elections, though he did not disclose from which constituency or on which party’s ticket.
The development has triggered sharp reactions across the political spectrum. Chief Minister Sarma, who also heads the state unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party, has publicly stated that the BJP’s doors are open for Borah and that he would be “welcome” if he chose to join the party. Sarma has also hinted that Borah could be offered a suitable seat if he aligns with the BJP.
Within the Indian National Congress, Borah’s resignation and subsequent statements have exposed deepening internal tensions, with party leaders offering differing accounts on whether his resignation has been formally accepted or withdrawn after discussions with the high command.
Political observers see Borah’s impending meeting with the chief minister as a significant moment in Assam’s evolving political landscape, with the potential to influence alignments and strategies as the state heads towards the 2026 Assembly polls.
