Debabrata Saikia Hints at Rift Within Assam Congress

Speculation over former Assam PradeSaikia Hints at Rift Within Assam Congresssh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhupen Borah’s political future intensified on Monday after senior Congress leader Debabrata Saikia hinted at a deepening rift within the party and suggested that Borah could be heading towards the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Speaking to the media, Saikia, who is also the Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Assembly, said Borah’s recent actions and public statements indicated growing dissatisfaction with the Congress leadership. While clarifying that he had no direct confirmation from Borah, Saikia remarked that the developments made it “appear likely” that Borah might consider joining the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Bhupen Borah, a veteran Congress leader with over three decades in the party, recently tendered his resignation from the Indian National Congress, triggering widespread political speculation ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections. His exit is being viewed as a significant setback for the Congress, which has been struggling to regain political ground in the state.
Adding to the buzz, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma publicly stated that the BJP’s doors were open for Borah, asserting that leaders who felt sidelined in Congress would find “respect and opportunity” in the ruling party. Sarma’s remarks further fuelled talk of a possible defection.
However, Borah has so far refrained from making any official announcement regarding his next political move. Sources within the Congress claim that senior party leaders are in touch with him and are making efforts to persuade him to reconsider his resignation.
As Assam’s political landscape heats up in the run-up to the elections, Borah’s decision—whether to join the BJP, return to Congress, or chart an independent course—is expected to have a significant impact on the state’s opposition politics.
