Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday met Tata Group Chairman N. Chandrasekaran on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting 2026, underscoring the Tata Group’s pivotal role in anchoring Assam’s emerging semiconductor industry.
Sharing details of the interaction, Sarma said the discussion focused on strengthening Assam’s semiconductor ecosystem and exploring opportunities for collaboration with global technology players. “The Tata Group is anchoring Assam’s semiconductor industry, and we are keen to strengthen this ecosystem by joining hands with key global players,” the Chief Minister said in a post on social media.
The meeting took place ahead of Sarma’s scheduled engagements with representatives of leading global semiconductor companies at the forum. Officials said the presence of the Tata Group in Assam has helped build confidence among international investors and has positioned the state as a promising destination in India’s expanding semiconductor landscape.
Assam is participating in the World Economic Forum for the first time, with the state government using the global platform to showcase its industrial potential and attract high-end investments. Sarma noted that while no specific agreements were announced during the meeting, discussions with industry leaders at Davos are expected to pave the way for future partnerships and investments.
The Chief Minister also highlighted Assam’s strategic advantages, including its improving infrastructure, supportive policy environment and growing talent pool, particularly in the Northeast. He said the state aims to diversify its economy by attracting technology-driven industries and becoming an integral part of India’s semiconductor supply chain.
The interaction with the Tata Group leadership is seen as a key step in Assam’s efforts to position itself as an emerging hub for advanced manufacturing and high-technology sectors, aligning with the Centre’s broader push to build a robust domestic semiconductor ecosystem.
