BJP Targets Rahul Gandhi After Priyanka Gandhi Gets Key Role in Assam Polls, Sparks Political Debate

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday launched a sharp attack on the Congress leadership after Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was given a key organisational role ahead of the Assam Assembly elections, mocking her brother Rahul Gandhi and questioning whether the move signals a shift in power dynamics within the party.
The Congress recently announced that Priyanka Gandhi would head the screening committee for the Assam elections, a panel responsible for shortlisting candidates. The decision is seen as a significant step as the party prepares for the high-stakes polls, expected next year.
Reacting to the development, BJP leaders alleged that the move reflects a lack of confidence in Rahul Gandhi’s leadership and hinted at an internal power struggle within the Congress. The ruling party accused the Congress of relying on the Gandhi family rather than strengthening grassroots leadership, using the opportunity to take political digs at Rahul Gandhi.
“The Congress cannot function without the Gandhi family. Giving Priyanka Gandhi such an important role raises questions about Rahul Gandhi’s relevance within his own party,” BJP leaders claimed, adding that the move exposes internal contradictions within the opposition camp.
The Congress, however, dismissed the BJP’s remarks as politically motivated and said Priyanka Gandhi’s appointment should not be seen through the prism of rivalry. Party leaders maintained that she has prior organisational experience and has been part of screening and campaign committees in the past.
Political observers say the BJP’s attack is part of a broader strategy to keep the Congress leadership under pressure ahead of elections, while the Congress’s decision highlights its attempt to tighten organisational control and improve candidate selection in Assam — a state where it is looking to regain lost ground.
With the Assam elections drawing closer, the political temperature is rising, and leadership decisions within major parties are increasingly coming under public and political scrutiny.
