Assam Police have sounded an alert over attempts by jihadi groups to establish an organised network in the state, with a focus on radicalising youth and expanding extremist influence, officials said.
Senior police officers said recent operations by the Assam Police Special Task Force (STF) revealed efforts by Bangladesh-based extremist organisations to gain a foothold in Assam and other parts of the Northeast. Acting on specific intelligence inputs, the STF arrested several suspects in coordinated raids carried out across multiple districts.
According to police, the arrested individuals were allegedly linked to Imam Mahmuder Kafila (IMK), an extremist group believed to have ideological links with the banned Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB). Investigators said the module was attempting to set up sleeper cells and recruit local youth through online platforms.
Police officials stated that encrypted messaging apps and social media platforms were being used to spread radical ideology, communicate with handlers and identify potential recruits. Some of those arrested were allegedly exposed to extremist literature and online sermons and were asked to pledge allegiance to the organisation.
“The investigation so far indicates a clear attempt to build a network in Assam by exploiting digital platforms and cross-border links,” a senior police officer said, adding that the activities posed a serious threat to internal security.
Search operations led to the seizure of mobile phones, digital devices and documents suspected to be linked to extremist propaganda and communication. Police said further analysis of the seized material is underway to identify additional members and handlers, including those operating from outside the country.
Assam Police have stepped up surveillance and coordination with central security agencies to prevent the spread of radicalisation and dismantle any remaining modules. Officials said more arrests could follow as the probe progresses.
The state government has reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace and security, warning that strict action will be taken against individuals or groups found involved in extremist activities.
