As Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Assam on Saturday for a two-day visit, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi called on the Centre to release a white paper on flood and erosion-related funding provided to the state over the years.
Addressing a public programme in Majuli, Gogoi said Assam continues to face devastating floods and river erosion annually, yet there is little clarity on the funds sanctioned and utilised for mitigation measures. He urged the Prime Minister and the Union government to bring transparency by clearly outlining the financial assistance extended to Assam for flood and erosion control.
Gogoi also demanded a comparative disclosure of disaster relief funds released to different states during major calamities, citing examples such as Tamil Nadu and Gujarat, to assess whether Assam has received its fair share of central assistance. He said such transparency would help the public understand the Centre’s commitment to addressing one of the state’s most persistent problems.
The Congress leader further alleged that despite repeated announcements, long-term solutions to Assam’s flood and erosion crisis remain unaddressed, severely impacting livelihoods, agriculture and infrastructure across the Brahmaputra valley.
Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Assam includes the inauguration and foundation-laying of several development projects, with the Centre highlighting infrastructure growth and investment in the state. However, Gogoi said development claims must be matched with concrete action on flood management, which he described as Assam’s most pressing humanitarian and environmental challenge.
