A skill development training programme on hygienic fish processing was organised in Kamrup district to enhance food safety, quality standards, and income-generating opportunities in the fisheries sector.
The two-day training, held on December 17 and 18 at the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Kamrup, was conducted under the North East Hill (NEH) Programme by the ICAR–Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (ICAR-CIFT), Cochin, in collaboration with KVK Kamrup.
The programme focused on improving hygiene and quality in the preparation of traditional and value-added fish products, including dry fish, fish pickle, chutney powder, and fish cutlet. Participants received hands-on training and practical demonstrations on safe processing, storage, and quality assurance techniques.
A total of 25 women participants from different parts of the district took part in the training. The sessions were coordinated by Dr. Sonmoina Bhuyan, Senior Scientist and Head of KVK Kamrup, while technical inputs were provided by experts from ICAR-CIFT, including Dr. A.A. Zynudheen, Dr. K.A. Martin Xavier, and Dr. Aneesh P.A.
The initiative aimed to empower local women by equipping them with modern processing skills, ensuring hygienic practices, and enabling them to access better market opportunities. Organisers said such programmes would contribute to improved livelihoods and the sustainable development of the fisheries sector in Assam.
