Why is 'World Mental Health Day' celebrated? Find out what's the theme this year

Mental Health Day

World Mental Health Day is celebrated every year on October 10. It was started in 1992 at the initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health. World Mental Health Day is aimed at creating and supporting awareness about mental health in the world. Mental Health Week is also celebrated in Australia as well as many other countries to raise awareness about mental health or illness.

The Covid pandemic had a major impact on a person's mental health, which is still going on. Even after this, there is very little discussion on mental health in our country. That's why this world mental health day 2022 is very important. It is on this day that people are made aware about mental health. We should focus on protecting and improving mental health.

According to a report by the World Health Organization (WHO), one in every eight people internationally suffer from a mental disorder. At the same time, people are facing a shortage of services, skills and funds available for mental health, especially in countries with law and middle income, so this year's World Mental Health Day is trying to reconnect people.

Stress is one of the major causes of suicides. According to a report by WHO, in 2019, 73,000 people committed suicide worldwide. Of these, 58 per cent were above the age of 50. You may be surprised to know that young people between the ages of 20 and 35 make the most suicides. They number more than 60,000. Most of them also include young people from law and middle-class families.

On the other hand, the sense of security that people-to-people relationships create has doubled the problem. This has led to the isolation of children, adolescents and old-age groups in particular, and there has been an unprecedented increase in mental illness problems among children and adolescents. The number of people suffering from mental illness in India has increased from 60 million in comparison to 2005 to 150 million in 2016.

This day is celebrated every year with a new theme. But this time, the theme 'Make mental health & well-being for all a global priority' has been kept by the World Mental Health Federation.

The National Mental Health Programme (NMHP) was launched in India in 1982 with the aim of developing mental health services. The National Mental Health Survey published its report in 2016. According to which 1 out of 20 people in India is mentally affected.

Every year since 1994, the day was celebrated with a new theme on the advice of Secretary General Eugene Brody. The theme for the first time was "Improving the Quality of Mental Health Services Worldwide". In 2018, on the occasion of World Mental Health Day, British Prime Minister Theresa May appointed Jackie Doyle as the country's first suicide prevention minister.
