Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid homage to the martyrs of the historic Assam Movement at the Swahid Smarak Kshetra in Guwahati, honouring their sacrifice for the protection of Assam’s identity, culture and rights.
The Prime Minister offered floral tributes at the memorial and observed a moment of silence in remembrance of the martyrs who laid down their lives during the six-year-long Assam Movement between 1979 and 1985. The movement, led by student organisations and civil society groups, culminated in the signing of the Assam Accord.
During his visit to the memorial complex, Mr. Modi also toured the martyrs’ gallery, which commemorates those who lost their lives during the agitation. The Swahid Smarak Kshetra stands as a symbol of the struggle and sacrifices made by the people of Assam in defence of their linguistic, cultural and political identity.
The Prime Minister’s homage was part of his ongoing visit to Assam, during which he has participated in several official engagements, including interactions with students under the Pariksha Pe Charcha programme and the launch of key development initiatives.
State leaders and officials accompanied the Prime Minister during the visit. The tribute was widely welcomed by families of the martyrs and members of the public, who described it as a significant gesture recognising the historical importance of the Assam Movement.
The visit highlighted the Centre’s acknowledgement of Assam’s history and the sacrifices made by its people, alongside its focus on development and infrastructure growth in the State.
