A passenger has accused an Air India Express pilot of physically assaulting him at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, leaving him bloodied after an argument near a security checkpoint. The airline has responded by grounding the pilot and ordering an internal inquiry.
The incident reportedly occurred at Terminal 1 when the passenger, identified as Ankit Dewan, objected to what he described as “queue cutting” near the security screening area. According to Dewan, a verbal altercation escalated into a physical confrontation, during which the pilot allegedly hit him multiple times. Photographs shared by the passenger on social media showed blood on his face and on the pilot’s shirt.
Dewan said the episode took place in front of his family, including his young children, and alleged that the incident caused them significant distress. He claimed that airport security personnel intervened after the assault.
Responding to the allegations, Air India Express said it strongly condemns any form of violent or unruly behaviour and has removed the pilot from flying duties with immediate effect. “The crew member involved has been grounded pending a thorough investigation. We are extending full cooperation to the authorities,” the airline said in a statement, adding that it maintains zero tolerance for actions that compromise passenger safety or dignity.
Sources indicated that the pilot was off duty and travelling as a passenger at the time of the incident. Airport security agencies, including the CISF, are said to be reviewing CCTV footage to ascertain the sequence of events.
Delhi Police said that while they are aware of the incident, a formal complaint will be required to initiate legal proceedings. Authorities from the aviation security establishment have also sought reports on the matter.
The incident has triggered concern over passenger safety and conduct standards within airport premises, with aviation officials emphasising that any breach of discipline will be dealt with strictly following the outcome of the investigation.
