The Ministry of Home Affairs gave first 14 persons in New Delhi recevied documents under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 on Wedensday. The BJP-led Central goverenment, however notified the CAA rules in March this year.
In the process the migrants who are persecuted for being non-muslims, Hindus, Sikhs , Jains, Buddists, Parsis, and Christians from Pakisthan, Afganisthan and Bangladesh will be granted Indian nationality.
Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla handed over the documents to some applicants in the national capital.
While the CAA ws passed in December 2019, the regulations that allowed for the granting of citizenship were not released until March 11 this year, resulting in a nearly four-year wait.
