Birthday Of Bhogeshwar Baruah, The First Assamese 'Arjuna' winner To Win Gold Internationally

Today is a special day for the sports world of Assam. Today is the birthday of sportsperson Bhogeshwar Baruah who brought glory to Assam by winning the Arjuna Award in 1953.

September 3 is a day of pride for Assamese. This day is celebrated as Abhiruchi Sports Day across Assam every year with respect to Arjun Bhogeshwar Baruah. The day has been celebrated across Assam since 1984 on September 3.

The eminent sportsperson was born on September 3, 1937 at Sundarpur on the banks of Jaisagar Pond in Sivasagar. Bhogeshwar Barua, who started his career in football, won a gold medal in relay at the 1916 All India Open Athletics Meet in Delhi, an Open Athletics tournament in Sri Lanka in 1964 and arjun bhogeshwar baruah won a gold medal at the 1964-65 National Athletics Championships in Bengaluru.
Arjun Bhogeshwar Baruah won a gold medal at the fifth Asian Games in Bangkok in 1966 to bring glory to the motherland.

He is the first Assamese to win a gold medal in international competitions. Arjun Bhogeshwar Baruah was awarded the 'Veer Silaraya Award' by the Assam government in 2020 for his contribution to the world of sports and lifelong pursuits.

Today i.e. September 3 is being celebrated as Abhiruchi Sports Day across the state. Arjun Bhogeshwar Baruah along with sports minister Bimal Bora and sports player Arjun Jayant Talukdar were present at the 38th Abhiruchi Sports Day function. Special cycle rallies are taken out from Chandmari's flying bridge to Nehru Stadium.
