Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia on Sunday accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of “betraying” the people of Assam on multiple fronts, alleging that the government has failed to ensure justice for popular singer Zubeen Garg.
Speaking to the media, Saikia said that despite repeated demands from the opposition and civil society, the state government did not take adequate steps to ensure a transparent and time-bound investigation into matters concerning Garg. He added that the issue continues to evoke strong public sentiment across Assam.
The Congress leader further claimed that his party had suggested the formation of an independent committee comprising eminent citizens to monitor the progress of the case and related legal proceedings. However, he alleged that the proposal was ignored by the government.
Saikia also targeted the BJP over broader governance issues, including the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). He alleged that the ruling party went against the wishes of the people of Assam, stating that the law contradicts the spirit of the Assam Accord.
Highlighting growing public dissatisfaction, Saikia said that issues like justice for Zubeen Garg, unemployment, and alleged policy failures could influence voter sentiment in the upcoming assembly elections.
The BJP has not yet issued an official response to the allegations.
The remarks come amid intensifying political campaigning in Assam, with both the ruling party and the opposition stepping up their attacks ahead of the crucial state elections.
