A major political controversy has erupted in Assam after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma alleged that senior Congress leader Pawan Khera attempted to establish contact with militant groups in an effort to influence the upcoming elections.
Addressing reporters, Sarma claimed that multiple First Information Reports (FIRs) have been filed against Khera regarding the alleged attempt to reach out to insurgent organisations. The chief minister said security agencies are examining the matter and appropriate legal action will follow based on the findings.
According to Sarma, three to four FIRs have been registered in connection with the allegations. He stated that any attempt to involve militant groups in the democratic process is a serious matter and would be dealt with strictly under the law.
The controversy comes amid escalating political tensions ahead of the 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly elections, with both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Indian National Congress intensifying their campaigns.
Reacting to the allegations, Congress leaders dismissed the claims and accused the ruling party of attempting to divert attention from key issues in the state. The party has indicated that it will respond politically to the accusations.
The row follows recent remarks by Khera criticising Sarma and alleging corruption against the Assam government, which further escalated the war of words between the two sides.
Political analysts believe the controversy may add to the already charged atmosphere in the state as parties prepare for the upcoming assembly polls. Meanwhile, authorities are expected to investigate the allegations to determine whether there is any evidence supporting the claims.
