The Assam government has stepped up monitoring of the state’s liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) supply after officials revealed that local production meets only around 30 per cent of the overall demand.
According to officials, the issue was discussed during a video conference chaired by the Union Home Secretary with chief secretaries and directors general of police from various states to review the availability of essential fuels, including LPG and diesel.
Assam Chief Secretary Ravi Kota said that despite the presence of several refineries in the state, local output currently fulfills only a small portion of the total requirement, making the state largely dependent on supplies from outside.
Assam has four operational refineries - Digboi Refinery, Guwahati Refinery and Bongaigaon Refinery operated by Indian Oil Corporation, along with Numaligarh Refinery run by Numaligarh Refinery Limited. However, their combined LPG production meets only about 30 per cent of the state’s demand.
To ensure uninterrupted supply, the state government has directed oil companies to increase production wherever possible. A high-level committee headed by the chief secretary has also been formed to closely monitor the fuel supply situation and coordinate with relevant departments.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma assured residents that there is no shortage of LPG in the state at present. He said the government is keeping a close watch on the situation and has mechanisms in place to ensure steady supplies through national distribution networks.
Officials added that LPG bottling plants in the Northeast are operating at full capacity to ensure timely delivery of cylinders to consumers across Assam.
The government has also warned against the spread of misinformation regarding fuel shortages on social media and said strict action will be taken against those found circulating rumours that could create panic among the public.
