Assam Honey Venture Turns to Mead Production

Assam Honey Venture Turns to Mead Production

An Assam-based honey enterprise has ventured into producing mead, an alcoholic beverage made from fermented honey, transforming surplus honey into a value-added product while opening new opportunities for local beekeepers.
The initiative was undertaken by the Guwahati-based startup Dream Hives Private Limited, which initially began as a honey business supporting beekeepers and forest-dependent communities across Assam. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the company faced declining demand and accumulated excess honey, prompting the founders to explore alternative uses for the product.
While researching new possibilities, the team discovered Mead, one of the world’s oldest alcoholic drinks made by fermenting honey with water and yeast. Inspired by the beverage’s history and growing popularity in the craft alcohol market, the startup began experimenting with fermentation techniques to develop a locally produced mead.
The company launched its craft mead brand AS01 Mead, incorporating flavours unique to the Northeast. Variants include blends infused with Assam tea and Bhoot Jolokia, offering consumers a distinctive taste rooted in the region’s ingredients.
Production has been set up at the Guwahati Biotech Park, where the facility is capable of producing around 2,000 litres of mead per month. The product is expected to be marketed in select cities in Assam through restaurants, pubs and licensed outlets.
By converting honey into a craft beverage, the venture aims not only to diversify the market for honey but also to create additional income streams for beekeepers in the State while showcasing Assam’s unique flavours to a wider audience.
