Jawaharlal Nehru Statue Vandalised in Assam’s Cachar District, One Detained

A statue of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, was vandalised and pulled down in the Pailapool market area of Cachar district, Assam, authorities said. The incident, which occurred late on February 23 or early February 24, has led to the detention of one person, while the investigation is ongoing.
According to police, CCTV footage shows the statue being forcefully uprooted using an excavator. The excavator has been seized, but the driver involved remains at large. An FIR has been registered at the Lakhipur Police Station, and police are examining the footage to identify the perpetrators.
The statue, installed decades ago near Nehru College, has long been a local landmark. Its destruction has sparked outrage among political leaders and residents. Local Congress leaders condemned the act, calling it a “planned attack” and demanded strict legal action against those responsible. They also questioned the silence of certain ruling party leaders regarding the incident.
Observers note that the timing of the vandalism, just weeks before the Assam Legislative Assembly elections, has raised concerns over potential political motivations.
Police have appealed to the public to provide any information that could assist in the investigation.
