Kaziranga, Manas Emerge as Front-Runners in Assam’s Dark Sky Mission

Kaziranga National Park and Manas National Park have emerged as the top contenders under Assam’s proposed Dark Sky mission, an initiative aimed at reducing light pollution, promoting astro-tourism and protecting nocturnal wildlife habitats.
According to officials, the State government has granted in-principle Cabinet approval to identify and develop certified dark sky parks or reserves. Preliminary scientific assessments were carried out at eight potential locations across Assam to evaluate night-sky quality and light pollution levels.
The findings placed Kaziranga at the top with 94.62% pristine dark area, closely followed by Manas at 92.51%. Officials said the high sky-quality indicators at both protected areas make them strong candidates for international dark sky certification. The hill district of Dima Hasao also showed promising potential, recording 87.05% sky purity indicators.
Sources in the Science, Technology and Climate Change Department said the next phase will involve detailed technical evaluation, inter-departmental coordination and preparation of documentation required for global certification standards. Planned interventions include installation of downward-focused LED lighting, smart lighting management in surrounding habitations and public awareness campaigns on responsible night lighting.
The Forest Department is expected to enforce strict zero-light protocols in core conservation zones and regulate night-time tourism activities. Officials believe the initiative could position Assam as a major destination for astro-tourism while generating sustainable livelihood opportunities for local communities.
However, the assessment has also flagged rising light pollution in areas such as Majuli, Pobitora, Dibru-Saikhowa and Orang, largely due to expanding settlements and tourism infrastructure. Authorities indicated that the certification process could take one to three years, requiring multi-season sky monitoring and phased lighting retrofits.
The Dark Sky mission is being seen as a key step toward preserving Assam’s natural nightscape while aligning conservation goals with sustainable tourism development.
