Bhupen Borah Joins BJP, Delivering Major Blow to Congress in Assam Ahead of Lok Sabha Elections

In a major political development ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, former Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhupen Borah joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday, dealing a setback to the Indian National Congress in the state.
Borah, who resigned from the Congress earlier this week after over three decades with the party, formally entered the BJP fold in the presence of senior party leaders. His switch comes at a politically sensitive time as Assam prepares for key electoral contests.
Confirming the move earlier, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had indicated that Borah would join the BJP along with a number of his समर्थक, calling the development a significant boost for the ruling party.
Following his induction, Borah hinted that more Congress leaders may soon join the BJP, suggesting the possibility of further realignments within Assam’s opposition camp.
Political observers believe the defection could reshape the state’s political dynamics in the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls, particularly in Upper Assam where Borah has maintained organisational influence.
