Heated Exchange Marks Congress Yatra Stop at Assam Medical College

A Congress outreach programme in Assam witnessed a tense moment on Saturday after a heated exchange broke out during the party’s yatra stop at a government medical college in Lakhimpur district.
The incident occurred when leaders of the Indian National Congress visited the Lakhimpur Medical College and Hospital as part of the party’s ongoing state-wide yatra. According to party sources, a woman, reportedly associated with the institution, confronted senior Congress leaders with pointed political questions, leading to a verbal altercation that briefly disrupted the visit.
Senior Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, who was present at the site, was seen responding firmly to the allegations raised, as party workers and onlookers gathered around. Videos of the exchange soon surfaced on social media, drawing sharp political reactions.
The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee alleged that the confrontation was a “deliberate attempt” by supporters of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party to disrupt the yatra and create an atmosphere of intimidation. The party claimed that its workers were targeted during the visit and accused the ruling dispensation of using “provocative tactics” to derail its public outreach.
APCC president Bhupen Borah condemned the incident, stating that such episodes reflect political insecurity. He asserted that the Congress would not be deterred from raising issues related to governance, employment, and public welfare across the state.
Despite the brief disruption, the Congress yatra continued as scheduled. Later in the day, party leaders addressed a public meeting in the district, reiterating their criticism of the Assam government and outlining their agenda ahead of the upcoming political battles.
The yatra is part of the Congress’s broader campaign to reconnect with voters across Assam, with multiple district-level programmes planned in the coming days.
