Prime Minister Narendra Modi has received an invitation from Bangladesh to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister-designate Tarique Rahman, scheduled to be held in Dhaka later this month, sources confirmed on Friday.
Tarique Rahman, the acting chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), is set to assume office following his party’s decisive victory in Bangladesh’s recent parliamentary elections. The oath-taking ceremony is expected to be attended by several foreign dignitaries, reflecting the regional and international interest in the political transition in Dhaka.
According to officials familiar with the matter, the invitation to Prime Minister Modi is part of Bangladesh’s outreach to neighbouring and friendly countries. While the Prime Minister has received the invite, there has been no official confirmation yet on whether he will attend the ceremony in person. It is understood that India may be represented by a senior leader if scheduling constraints prevent the Prime Minister’s participation.
The development is being closely watched in diplomatic circles, as it marks a potential reset in India–Bangladesh relations under a BNP-led government. India and Bangladesh share deep historical, cultural, and economic ties, along with cooperation on security, connectivity, and trade.
Earlier, the BNP leadership had signalled its intent to maintain constructive relations with New Delhi while pursuing Bangladesh’s national interests. The invitation to the Indian Prime Minister is seen as a gesture aimed at ensuring continuity in bilateral engagement during the change of government.
Officials in New Delhi said that India would respond to the invitation through appropriate diplomatic channels in due course
