Assam: Sixth accused arrested in Digboi mob killing case, shutdown lifted

Police in eastern Assam have arrested the sixth accused in connection with the mob killing that took place in Digboi, even as normal life gradually returned to the area with the lifting of a shutdown imposed after the incident.
The arrested accused has been identified as Amardeep Sahu alias Nene, who was apprehended from Duliajan following sustained police efforts. With this arrest, a total of six persons have now been taken into custody in the case. The remaining five accused are already in judicial custody.
According to Assam Police, the arrests are part of an ongoing investigation into the lynching of a local youth, which triggered widespread protests and tension in Digboi and adjoining areas. The incident had led to a complete shutdown of markets and business establishments, called by local organisations demanding swift justice.
Senior police officials said multiple teams are continuing the investigation and examining CCTV footage and other evidence to identify all those involved in the crime. Authorities have also indicated that further arrests cannot be ruled out as the probe progresses.
Following assurances from the district administration and police regarding strict action against the accused, protestors agreed to withdraw the shutdown. Shops reopened and vehicular movement resumed, bringing relief to residents after days of disruption.
The district administration has appealed to the public to maintain peace and cooperate with the investigation. Security has been maintained in sensitive areas to prevent any further flare-ups.
The mob killing has drawn strong condemnation from civil society groups and political leaders, who have called for exemplary punishment to deter such incidents in the future.
