The president of Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), Lurinjyoti Gogoi, has voiced support for the Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) inaugurated at Moran, taking a position that contrasts with the stand adopted by the Congress on the strategic defence project. Gogoi said that matters related to national security and defence preparedness should rise above partisan politics and welcomed the development as being in the larger interest of the country and the Northeast region.
The Moran Emergency Landing Facility, inaugurated by Narendra Modi, is the first highway-based emergency airstrip in the Northeast. Developed on a stretch of national highway in Dibrugarh district, the facility is designed to allow fighter jets and transport aircraft of the Indian Air Force to land during emergencies, significantly enhancing the region’s strategic and disaster-response capabilities.
Gogoi’s remarks mark a clear departure from the position of the Indian National Congress, whose leaders have raised objections to the project. Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi had earlier questioned the initiative, citing concerns that sparked political debate in the state.
Observers note that AJP’s support for the Moran ELF reflects a nuanced political stance, with the regional party backing a central government-led defence infrastructure project despite being in the opposition space. The development has added a new dimension to Assam’s political discourse, highlighting differing approaches among opposition parties on issues related to national security and strategic infrastructure.
