All government and provincialised schools in Assam’s Kamrup Metropolitan district, including Guwahati, will remain closed till January 6 due to an intense cold wave gripping the region. The decision was taken by the district administration in view of persistently low temperatures and adverse weather conditions affecting daily life.
An official order issued by the education authorities said the temporary closure is aimed at safeguarding the health and safety of students, particularly young children, as the city continues to experience severe cold, dense fog and occasional drizzle. School heads have been directed to inform students, parents and staff about the closure and ensure that no academic or co-curricular activities are conducted during this period.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Guwahati has been recording temperatures significantly below normal, with weather conditions likely to remain unfavourable over the next few days. The prolonged cold spell has raised concerns over early-morning commutes and the risk of cold-related illnesses among school-going children.
While the order applies to government and provincialised institutions, private schools in the district have been advised to take a call independently, keeping student safety in mind.
Authorities said schools are expected to reopen on January 7, subject to improvement in weather conditions. Any further extension of the closure will be announced if the cold wave persists.
