Assam suffered a five-wicket defeat against Baroda in their Vijay Hazare Trophy Elite Group match, as Baroda successfully chased down a competitive target to secure a crucial victory on Wednesday.
Batting first, Assam put up a fighting total of 282 runs, but were bowled out before completing their allotted 50 overs. Opener Pradyun Saikia led the charge with a well-compiled 67, while Sibsankar Roy and skipper Sumit Ghadigaonkar chipped in with half-centuries to stabilise the innings. Despite these efforts, Assam lost wickets at regular intervals, preventing them from accelerating in the final phase.
In reply, Baroda paced their chase well and reached the target with five wickets in hand, finishing the match with more than two overs to spare. Vishnu Solanki played the anchor role with an unbeaten 88, while Priyanshu Moliya provided solid support with a fluent knock. Their partnership ensured Baroda stayed in control during the latter half of the chase.
Assam’s bowlers tried to apply pressure in the middle overs, with the spin department picking up key wickets, but the Baroda batters handled the situation calmly to seal the win.
The loss adds to Assam’s challenges in the group stage, as they look to regroup and strengthen their campaign in the remaining matches. Baroda, meanwhile, gained valuable momentum with the five-wicket victory as the tournament progresses.
