The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for paying tribute to the martyrs of the historic Assam Agitation, while simultaneously urging the Centre to take stringent and decisive action against infiltration in the state.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, AASU chief adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya said the Prime Minister’s homage to the martyrs was a long-awaited gesture and acknowledged the sacrifices made by those who laid down their lives during the six-year-long Assam Movement from 1979 to 1985. He noted that the agitation was instrumental in protecting Assam’s identity, culture and political rights, and ultimately led to the signing of the Assam Accord.
AASU stated that while the tribute was welcome, it must be followed by concrete steps to address the unresolved issues of illegal infiltration and implementation of key clauses of the Assam Accord. The student body urged the Union government to adopt a tough stance against illegal immigrants and anti-national elements entering Assam through the porous India–Bangladesh border.
“The respect shown to the martyrs should translate into strong action to safeguard Assam’s demographic and cultural identity,” Bhattacharya said, stressing that infiltration continues to pose a serious threat to national security and social harmony in the state.
The AASU leader also called for enhanced border security measures, stricter monitoring of vulnerable stretches, and swift detection and deportation of foreigners staying illegally in Assam. He emphasised that safeguarding the state’s borders is crucial not only for Assam but for the country as a whole.
The statement comes amid renewed debates in Assam over illegal immigration, border management and the full implementation of the Assam Accord. AASU reiterated that fulfilling the promises made under the Accord remains essential to honour the sacrifices of the Assam Agitation martyrs and to ensure lasting peace and stability in the region.
