With New Year celebrations approaching, the Guwahati administration has intensified road safety measures across the city by deploying high-tech enforcement gadgets to curb traffic violations, drunk driving and overspeeding.
The Assam Transport Department, in coordination with traffic police, has equipped enforcement teams with body cameras, speed detection guns and dash cameras to ensure stricter and more transparent monitoring of vehicles. The initiative aims to reduce road accidents during the festive season, which traditionally witnesses a spike in traffic and late-night movement.
Transport Minister Parimal Suklabaidya recently flagged off the enhanced enforcement drive and personally inspected vehicle checks at key locations, including ABC Point, where motorists were screened using breath analysers to detect drunk driving.
Officials said the new gadgets will help accurately record violations, prevent disputes during checks, and strengthen evidence collection for legal action. “These tools will bring accountability and improve the effectiveness of enforcement,” an official said.
According to official data, Assam recorded over 160 road accident deaths between December and mid-January last year, prompting authorities to step up preventive measures. Busy stretches such as the Jalukbari–Khanapara corridor have been identified as accident-prone zones and are under special surveillance.
The administration has warned that strict action will be taken against violators, including those driving under the influence, overspeeding, or flouting traffic rules. The intensified checks will continue throughout the New Year period to ensure safer roads for residents and visitors.
Authorities have appealed to citizens to cooperate with enforcement teams and follow traffic norms to prevent avoidable accidents during the festive season.
