Brahmaputra Mishap: Third Body Recovered in Kharghuli, Search Continues for Two Missing

Rescue teams recovered a third body from the Brahmaputra River at Kharghuli on Wednesday, while search operations remain underway to trace two more missing persons following a tragic river mishap earlier this month.

Officials said the body recovered has been identified as Sagar Gautam, who was among the five persons swept away by strong currents while bathing in the river near Bhakti Kutir in the Kharghuli area on December 10.

The incident occurred when a group of nine people entered the Brahmaputra for a ritual bath. Due to sudden strong currents, five persons were dragged into deeper waters, while the remaining four managed to swim back to safety.

Earlier, the bodies of Pratap Rai and Raunak Sadak were recovered from the river, taking the total number of recovered victims to three. The two persons still missing have been identified as Abhijit Choudhury and Upesh Kumar.

Search and rescue operations are being carried out jointly by teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), with the help of boats and trained divers. Officials said the operation has been hampered by strong undercurrents and fluctuating river conditions.

Authorities have once again cautioned people against entering the Brahmaputra at unguarded locations, warning that the river’s currents can be deceptively dangerous even when water levels appear calm.

The tragic incident has cast a pall of gloom over the area, with families of the missing continuing to wait anxiously as search efforts continue.
